Technology in the hands of our children
-by Vanessa Navarro While everybody used to argue if technology was an issue in education, now people are asking if technology is making any improvements to student’s learning. Students and teachers had adapted themselves to the usage of this technology and the changes it come to their way of learning. Students had experience this change and the improvements of their education is noticed (Institute of Educational Science, 2010). Almost 74 percent of students have access to this technology at school and at home, but what about the other 26 percent of students (Child Trend and Data Bank, 2010). Having this technology by their hands at home is something most students should have to complete assignments, readings, homework etc. Therefore, is important to have under consideration an Education Reform that would require to each school in Texas to have a program in their schools from middle school to high school where they would lend laptops, calculators, etc. that would help enhance student’s education from home. Having this technology at home would help students have more ways of achieving their project instead of staying late at the library to complete a research paper. Most programs have restrictions where only students who have academic need may have been included in this program. Some students need help getting a piece of technology at home but may not show it by their economic status. Opening these programs to all students to improve their education should be enforce because the education of the students of today is an important topic parents, teachers and including the students should be aware. An example of having this Education Reform, having great results and getting more students improve in their education by being more interest in the content of their classes would be what Thompson School District at Colorado did for their students. They opened an e-lending library in early March 2013 for staff and students to make their visits to their library being easier for them. By lending them iPads to their students and making their monthly visit to the library more like from home. They district subscribes to virtual library services through a company called Overdrive, people form the company said that it would be more economic for them to lend their books virtually then printing more books and using more money for book that may not be open in years. To mid-April more than 450 checkouts have been made and more than 500 students have done their monthly library visit (Wildhalm, 2013) |

In the United States are organizations where people can donate their use
electronics besides throwing them away and contaminating more the environment, by donating their computers and other electronics to this organization/programs they may provide some computers to schools who may need this electronics, for example schools where some students may not have the opportunity to have a computer at home. One agency that is in charge of doing this is called United States Environmental Protection Agency where they are in charge in different part of the Unites States to provide this electronics to people who may make a better use of it and to help the environment. One can visit there page www.epa.gov for more information on how to help them or your school to get provided with electronics. Getting opportunities for your schools are everywhere but the action has to be taken from one to help your community. By helping students with their education, finding interesting their classes and making them easier to do their research papers. One action can change the life of students and most people want the best for their children who are the future, giving them a good education will be reflected in the grades and how they will develop in the future. © 2012 by Vanessa Navarro.
