Benefits of Technology on Education: Genre Analysis of Online Article and Commercial.
The evolution of technology is something students have seen in their classrooms, society and at home. However, other students haven’t seen this change because they do not have the same opportunity as other students do. In high school there are programs that lend items to students of their program such as laptops, calculators, iPads etc. But they would only give these advantages to students that have an economic need, but what about students that will appreciate a little more access to technology. Everyone knows someone, who needs technology to do their homework, but they cannot qualify but that does not mean that they cannot afford one. Using the best of this technology can help teachers to give a better and entertaining lecture and the students enjoy and understand the lesson.
The audience’s response is crucial to the roles of the genres and how effective they are. Is important how these genres are organized, their use of colors, font and how credible will be the impact to the audience. The online article “How Technology is Changing Education as we know it” Witten by Jeff Dunn and a helpful commercial named “The History of Technology in Education” produced by SMART Company. These two genres help understand how useful technology has become to students and how important is to let them have the opportunity to have some sort of technology at home no matter if they can or cannot afford it. On the online article explains what opportunities students from high school and college have by having a computer at home, for example how colleges provide doing online classes to complete a degree. It explains the importance of technology at school and how now high school provides courses on, business computers to prepare their students with programs such as Microsoft, Power Point, Excel etc. This way when they get to college they will know how to use the main programs that professors use. On the other hand the commercial it is really helpful because it gives you a really fast, straight up and cute over view of technology by showing simple illustrations to make the viewer understand how big the changes on technology has been. In order to figure out which genre was more effective on communicating their purpose, use of rhetorical appeal and how well structured was, we will analyzed the three of them.
Purpose and Audience
In the online article “How Technology is Changing Education as we know it” written by Jeff Dunn is intended to people that are interested on how they could improve their skills on computer programs, what school programs are available for them and how colleges are providing the opportunity of doing online classes to complete a degree. The intended audience may be teenagers in high school, most college students, teachers that want to get informed of the programs this way they could provide the opportunity to their students and be well informed about the evolution of technology on education. This article could be reached from the internet, maybe students 16 and over or with permission of the parents to access the internet. Most people have experience the changes of technology on schools and outside, but what Jeff Dunn mentions is how technology will be making changes on the future we cannot get used to one thing because most likely will change. The audience will read this article to be more informed about how this new programs work and how they can bring these programs to their high schools. The article gives all the necessary information on how they can start this program on their school, who qualifies and what would be the benefits of involving into their program. It will take the reader approximately four to six minutes to read the article but it also depends on the person. It offers the opportunity to get involve to raise your voice, this way the programs he is introducing in this article will get recognition.
The commercial You-Tube provided named “The History of Technology in Education” produced by SMART Company provides information by showing the evolution of technology with simple illustrations, but is very different from my first genre because the article explains what programs are available for the audience this way they learn and know how to be provided with some sort of technology. This commercial focuses on how the technology inside the classroom has developed, provides you with information on how the technology we have now has change and how it started. The commercial takes approximately 4 minutes, it starts by showing the audience simple drawings with titles of the era explaining the evolution of technology on education staring with cave drawings from 30,000 B.C.E. all the way to today’s technology. The intended audience is really broad; it could start from children up to grownups. Starting from teachers wanting to learn more about the evolution to technology and how they could teach their students with simple drawings to just a person wanting to be informed about how the technology has change and how they could help develop the technology from today . It is really helpful because it gives you a really fast, straight up and cute over view of technology and even children will find this commercial helpful because they will understand how drastic the change has been.
Both genres are very helpful, they provide really good information that could help the viewer and the reader to develop their knowledge about technology. Both are about the same subject but cover different information, the article provides choices about what programs are available for students and the commercial provides just and overview of how technology has change. The intended audience for both genres could share the same but the difference would be is that the commercial could be more intended to children because of the illustrations it showed.
Rhetorical Issues: Ethos, Pathos, Logos
The online article by Jeff Dunn explaining the change of education as we know it includes ethos by finding it from a reliable source because it provides accurate information to provide credibility for the audience. It provided logos by giving evidence of how students have change the way of learning to a positive way, were their grades have increase, these may also go under ethos because it gives credibility to the readers because of the statistics. It also provided images of computers, smart boards, projectors and others, as he said “Even if classrooms are well-equipped with interactive whiteboards and the latest short throw projectors or document cameras, schooling in a general has increase on a positive way, but we try to keep our school system traditional.” (Dunn, 2012). This can show the audience some of the technology that is use inside the classrooms now days that has made a positive progress to students.
In the commercial “The History of Technology in Education” has a different way of explaining their information because the commercial only shows visuals of how the technology has change. Ethos can and cannot be part of this commercial because at the end gives the name of the company and a URL, but this doesn’t give enough credibility to the viewer. It doesn’t provide evidence, it’s just a quick commercial to give a quick over view of how technology has change on education. The commercial can create an emotion of happiness because of how they make the drawings become like a cartoon showing how most students interact on the classroom when they are trying out a new type of technology. Adding to pathos, if the viewer is older it can give a quick reminder of how their high school years were and how they felt when they graduated. Overall the commercial can give different affects depending of the viewer.
On both genres could have some sort of ethos because of how on the commercial they provided their company’s name SMART and how in the online article provides statistics on how the improvement of the students has change, “Three out of five students own a iPad or some sort of technology, this way they could get copies of their textbooks besides carrying five hundred page books on their backpacks every day to school.” (Dunn, 2012) Wile the commercial can show some sort of pathos to some of their viewers, the online article provided credible evidence to their readers.
Structure
The article was separated into 4 subjects, first paragraph explains the importance of technology on education, second paragraph explains the background of technology, third paragraph explains how teachers can supplement their lessons in exciting ways and fourth paragraph was the conclusion, explaining all the above helpful information. Adding pictures of what types of technology are using in the classrooms, giving their audience a better knowledge of what the students of today have. The web side overall is well organized adding at the end a comment box were other people can give their personal opinions about the programs the article is mentioning and they could try to communicate with others on the comment box. It provided statistics of students, how the increase of attention inside the classroom has change. The font is good, making the whole article look more professional. Overall, the structure of this genre simplifies its message to their readers giving their main purpose of the article to informed be approached, the article is well organized having an intro and conclusion, giving evidence on how technology is helping their students and providing information about the programs that are available to the people that are interested.
The commercial has limitations of time, but they gave the viewer the exact time to get an idea of how technology has change in our classrooms. Providing their company’s name and URL, giving some sort of credibility to the commercial. Making the simple visuals give us a quick reminder of how high school years were for most people, making the viewer appreciate more the advantage for the technology we have now. The commercial visuals were from simple drawings, black and white giving the name of the era on blue font with big letters.
In comparison of both genres, the online article was better organized more credible. Giving different choices of how they can change their schools technology, giving the opportunity to their reader to understand what programs are available for them. The commercial only give a quick over view of how technology has change, they did not approached a question or anything from the viewer, it only provided with the knowledge of how good our technology today is. Overall, the online article was the one fulfilling the requirements of a credible and reliable source.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the most effective genre was the online article named “How Technology is Changing Education as We Know it” by Jeff Dunn because it explains the main point on how technology is important for our education form high school to college. The article persuades their readers to inform others about the importance of technology and how we can take advantage of it. It also mentions the help some students are having because they do not have computers at home that way some of them cannot complete their homework. Proving with information about the programs colleges are proving to some of their students. The message both of the genres are trying to give is the same, is trying to inform about the evolution technology is having and by reading the online article and by watching the commercial you can get well informed about the changes technology is giving education.
